Minimum qualifications for the position of Firefighter - $53,380 - $69,904 base yearly salary

*Both the TCFP Basic Fire certification and the Texas DSHS EMT-B certification are required to meet the minimum qualifications of the position of Firefighter with the Midland Fire Department along with the other stated qualifications. Those applicants who do not currently possess both certifications will default to the Fire Recruit position.

** Firefighter applicants will be placed on a hiring list ranked highest to lowest based on the scores obtained from the written test and successful completion of the physical agility test. Those applicants considered for employment, based on the number of openings, will be called in for oral interviews. Upon the recommendation of the interview board, the applicant will: 1) not be considered for employment or 2) will move forward and start the City of Midland employment process (background check, physical, review of driving records, etc.) and be hired at the Firefighter position.

Those persons who have obtained either a TCFP Basic Suppression Certification or a DSHS EMT-B/Paramedic certification but do not have both certifications are encouraged to apply for the Fire Recruit position. These individuals may move up the hiring list as required certifications are obtained.

All applicants must have a clean driving record.

  • Be between the ages of 18 and 35, having not met the 36th birthday at the time of appointment.
  • A valid Texas issued driver’s license must be obtained prior to appointment.
  • Current Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Fire Suppression Certification
  • Current National Registry Emergency Medical Technician certification or the Texas Department of State Health Services EMT-B certification. Preference will be given to those certified/licensed as a Texas DSHS or National Registry Paramedic.
  • Successfully complete all entrance testing processes including, but not limited to, written examination, physical agility test, oral interview, medical physical and background checks.


Minimum qualifications for the position of Fire Recruit - $42,285 base yearly salary

*** Recruit applicants will be placed on a hiring list ranked highest to lowest based on the scores obtained from the written test and successful completion of the physical agility test. Based on available openings the MFD will determine the need to host a TCFP approved Fire Academy. Applicants on the Fire Recruit list will be called in to interview for placement in an MFD fire academy. Upon the recommendation of the interview board, the applicant will: 1) not be considered for employment or 2) will move forward and start the City of Midland employment process (background check, physical, review of driving records, etc.) and will hire on as a Fire Recruit attending the MFD Fire Academy.

Note: preference will be given to those individuals who hold current National Registry or Texas DSHS EMS certifications when considering Fire Recruit job offerings to attend the MFD Fire Academy.
